Phillip Mullens Sr.

Phillip Jennings Mullens, Sr, loving husband, Father, Granddad, Brother, Uncle, Son and friend to many, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday May 4th, 2026. He is survived by his beloved wife Debbie of 53 years; 4 children Phillip Jr (Erika), Bob, Catherine (Tim), and Daniel; 4 grandchildren Madison, Dylan (Amanda), Grant, and Elowyn; 2 sisters Carolyn and Vera; 2 Nephews Ples (Kerry) and Ben (Liz), Niece Sandra (David) and many other family and friends whom he loved dearly. Phil was born August 25, 1951 in Sutton, West Virginia to Jupior and Mabel (Norman) Mullens. He was raised in West Virginia until he moved to Calumet City, Illinois where he graduated from T.F. North High School in 1969. He enjoyed his time with the Boy Scouts of America, accomplishing his dream of becoming an Eagle Scout. After high school he graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago having studied Tool and Dye Making. He worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube in NWI for two years, then joined their apprenticeship program, becoming a journeyman machinist. Phil spent many years working at Bowl-Mor Lanes in Calumet City, working side-by-side with family members and making many friends along the way. After completing his time there, he returned to his love of working as a machinist and rose to be plant foreman at Letellier M.H.E. Throughout his years, no matter where he went, he was well regarded as a man who showed exceptional leadership skills. Phil married the love of his life Debbie on April 14th, 1973. They raised four children, Phil Jr (Erika), Bob, Catherine (Tim) and Daniel. Phil loved spending time with his family and watching all four of his grandchildren; Madison, Dylan (Amanda), Grant and Elowyn grow up. Phil had great pride in his family and loved supporting and attending anything that his children and eventually grandchildren were a part of; sporting events, band concerts, church plays, and events. Phil had a great sense of humor, he loved a good joke, and enjoyed being witness to the banter amongst the boisterous crew that he had the pleasure to call his family. He instilled a sense of warmth, silliness, and appreciation for the good times when his whole crew was together. His huge grin was a true reflection of the pride and joy he felt when surrounded by the ones he loved. Even though his teeth weren’t real, his smile surely was. Phil was an avid hunter and shared his passion with his sons, son-in-law Tim, grandson Dylan, and life-long hunting buddy of 50 years Nelson. He was a Lifetime Member of NRA National Rifle Association. In addition to bow hunting, Phil enjoyed spending any time outdoors whether it be a mid-day drive with a stop at Burger King for lunch and a Pepsi, watching the deer wander in the fields, watching the birds enjoy the feeders outside his windows, or working, mowing, and maintaining the family campground. He found peace and solace when being in nature. Phil loved the amazing beauty of his birth place, West Virginia, a place he would have considered to be “Almost Heaven". Showing the wonders of the land that he loved so much and telling stories of his time there was one of his most enjoyable ways to spend time with his family. Swimming in the creek, hiking to the waterfalls, looking down on the holler, and driving up to the ridge was his idea of the perfect day. He spent his final day surrounded by family and left this world peacefully as they sang Take Me Home, Country Roads to guide him to his final resting place, true Heaven. “Country roads, take me home To the place I belong West Virginia, mountain mama Take me home, country roads” - Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert, & John Denver In Memory of Phil Mullens Phil and Debbie shared a deep heart for missions and the spread of the gospel around the world. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be given to further that work. Checks may be made payable to Bible Baptist Church, with “Missions” noted in the memo line, and mailed to: Bible Baptist Church 8720 Orchard Drive Highland, IN 46322 Friends and relatives may visit with family on Friday, May 8, 2026 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Memory Lane Funeral Home 6305 W. Lincoln Hwy, Crown Point, IN 46307. The Funeral Service will be on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at 10 a.m. with a visitation one hour prior beginning at 9 a.m. Pastor Andy Huffman will be officiating.
